How Physiotherapy Helps
Physical therapy is a profession known for musculoskeletal assessment and treatment for the purpose of decreasing pain, facilitating normal motion, and improving function in activities of daily living. Treating painful intercourse requires simply applying these principles to the pelvic floor muscles.
Presence of pain for a prolonged period of time can cause increase in muscle tone (even spasm), which results in further increase in pain. Pain in genital area can cause Pelvic Muscle Floor tightness, which can contribute to pain with intercourse.
Treatments consist of:
- Education on Anatomy of pelvis, musculoskeletal structures and proper function
- Progressive muscle relaxation may help a woman regain control over vaginal muscles
- Desensitization is a way of replacing old, painful experiences with new pain free sensations
- Trigger Points Release results in decreasing pain and pelvic floor muscle tension, making sexual intercourse possible and more pleasurable
- Pelivic Floor Re-education
The treatment usually consists of a home program of exercises, muscle relaxation with behavioral modification techniques. Prior to a Physiotherapy treatment you are required to have a formal Dr’s referral (Family Physician or a specialist)
